Malinga’s spell against South Africa
Written by: Tulie Amarasingha
Was I dreaming? Was it real? I had to slap myself couple of times to realize that Malinga just gave us hopes of winning this match (Sri Lanka v South Africa in Guyana, 2nd Super 8’s). I was so happy, I spilled the plate of rice I was eating. It was really good bowling by Malinga. When Pollock was dismissed by Malinga, Pollock was laughing when he was going off the wicket. I think he was not laughing so much when they were 207-9 eh? It was the miracle we needed! Malinga was the one to perform the miracle. He was on fire in the last couple of overs. He was pitching the ball right up to the batsmen’s boot and the ball is in-swinging. I think it is more like reverse-swing. Anyhow, Malinga produced few gem of a deliveries. The South African lower order was in for a treat from Malinga. The batsmen did not pick the ball at all. At the end Pietersen found the edge and went on to grab a victory over us. Had Mahela posted a second slip, it would have been our game. Well, the commentator was saying right before Malinga bowled that Mahela should post a second slip. I think it was bit of commentators curse really.
So Anyways, what’s gone is gone. We should look forward to the WestIndies game on Sunday in Guyana. Hope the Guyanese would favor us and prepare a good batting pitch for the game. Also I hope Mahela balls Malinga as the second spell. If Malinga is to open up bowling with Vass, he gives out too many extras. well, lets wait and see what would Mahela do. I’m pretty sure coach and him would come up with a new game plan for Sunday. I wonder if there is any plans for Mahela to drop himself down the order and bat. hmm…
