It was the 2nd Super 8’s game in the Cricket World Cup and It was Sri Lanka’s first world cup game. Sri Lanka having won the toss, elected to bat first. I think this is the first time Mahela won a toss. The commentators were saying it was a good toss to win.

Tharanga made another bad start and nicked one to slip shortly. Jayasuriya also followed after taking onPollock for couple of over. The Pollock v. Jayasurita battle was fun to watch. Jayasuriya’s 383 ODI experience v. Shaun Pollock’s 278 ODI experience. At the end Jayasuriya eventually won the battle and there came a bowling change from Smith’s side. I think it was a crucial bowling change that changed the face of the game. Soon after coming to ball, Langeveldt picked up Jayasuriya. I’m sure Jayasuriya would regret that shot of his. All this time Jayawardena was on the crease and was not looking that good. He shortly departed next, popping the ball on the air and their came Sri Lanka’s middle order. Now it was Sangakkara and Chamara Silva on the crease. After couple of overs, Sangakkara departed as well. Now Sri Lanka was in really big trouble. Chamara Silva was joined by Thilakaratne Dilshan. They were not looking really good while running between wickets. I the pair had couple of intense calls. At the end the bubble blasted and Chamara Silva was run out for 9 runs. Our middle order was vastly exposed to South Africa’s good bowling and it was the inevitable. At the end Dilshan and Arnold abled to hold our innings together and 96 run partership. The best partnetship against South Africa for the 6th wicket by a Sri Lankan pair. Once the partnership was broken the rest of the batting went down the drain. Within the last 5 over, South Africa picked up 5 wickets for just 4 runs. At the end, the Sri Lanka posted a total of 209 for all out and for South Africa, chasing that total was not hard till the introduction of Malinga, the Slinger. The Slinger picked up 4 wickets in the last few overs of the match. It was a double hattrick for Malinga and is the first time done in World Cricket. It was the only positive to be taken from this game. Sri Lanka made too many mistakes today and the game was won at the end by SA by just one wicket. Sri Lanka simply did not deserve to win today, because of the mistakes they made on the field and while batting. Let’s hope Mahela and the rest won’t make any mistakes again in the future games. If they do, I think they would have to return home and certainly we would not throw rocks at their houses would we? C’mon lads, put your head down and play. We are behind you all the time. At good times and bad times both!

I think another positive that can be taken from this game is the resolve and maturity shown by the middle order in the face of a top order crisis, for the second game in a row.
Arnold, Dilshan and Chamara Silva have shown that this team, just like the 96 champion team, has a strong back up force to the top order. They to me, resemble the roles played by the likes of Roshan Mahanama, Arjuna Ranatunga, Hashan Tillekaratne and Dharmasena, during the 96 WC. But I am not going as far as to put them within the same brackets as those batsmen yet. But with every game, they are steadily maturing into a formidable middle order bit by bit. With Atapattu also waiting in the shadows to grab a chance, things could only get better as we move along.
